SA’s high unemployment rates are swept in front of Eskom’s door

Mining houses and corporate businesses are accusing Eskom for the high unemployment rates since their pathetic service delivery is causing uncertainty in the economy.

Several institutions announcing in recent weeks that they would need to start retrenchments, unemployment has increased alarmingly rapidly and even greater retrenchments are provided.

The uncertainty caused by Eskom in the supply of electricity has forced many mining houses to generate self-sufficient power, but which is far more expensive than using the national power supply.

Eskom is also accused of being directly responsible for the poor economic situation and the fact that foreign investors are not interested if power supply cannot be guaranteed in South-Africa.

Unemployment has now reached the 29% level, which is the highest in history, and employment is estimated at 52% according to figures applicable for December.

Court deals Soweto residents who wants to pay a flat tarrif of R150 a month for electricity a blow by striking case off the roll

Soweto owes R20bn to power provider Eskom, but residents of the township only want to pay R150 a month for their power. Mpho Sesedinyane, ANC councilor and chair of the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) in Soweto, feels that R150 is a fair amount and that, given the state of the economy, the residents can only afford to pay this much a month for power.

However, Eskom rejected the proposal of a fixed power tariff of R150 per month for electricity. Eskom spokesperson Reneilwe Semenya said this proposal by community leaders in Soweto was unrealistic and residents had to pay for what they consumed. He also referred to the Johannesburg High Court which on Tuesday rejected an application to restore power supply to Soweto and allow residents to pay a flat rate for power.

Soweto owes R20 billion of the R420 billion owed to the Johannesburg metro power supplier. Semenya believes that if a fixed power tariff is set, it will certainly give rise to a culture

Eskom which is battling with R441 billion debt, won’t be privatized – ANC-regime’s plan to save the power supplier from ruin disappointing

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan yesterday unveiled the government’s latest blueprint to kickstart Eskom, which proposes major shifts in the ailing entity’s business model. Politicians, as well as political analysts and financial experts are disappointed in the plan, whose content can be vague and probably poorly implemented, as announced by the minister. Not only did he disappointed South Africa but also the credit rating agencies with his “plan” to save the power supplier from ruin.

Experts point out that the ANC will not privatize Eskom, because it is then out of their hands, and the fear exists that hundreds of ANC members will be fired because it is an overall overpopulated workforce.

Gordhan recommended, among other things, that the various power plants be divided into groups and have to compete with each other over who can generate the cheapest power, but experts say it will bring no harm to the entity’s financial position.

Eskom problems not solved yet – Possibility of load shedding exists in the coming months

The DA said in a statement on Thursday that it had reliably heard that Eskom had issued a warning to municipalities about the “strong possibility of load shedding in September and October” this year.

Natasha Mazzone, DA’s shadow minister of public affairs,  said in the statement that the opposition party has now written to Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza for transparency in order to clarify the matter.

“Eskom has continually failed in its mandate to provide reliable and sustained electricity supply and it appears as if millions of South Africans and the faltering economy will be abandoned by Eskom again,” says Mazzone.

According to the statement, each load-bearing phase is estimated to cost the country about R1 billion a day.

“Eskom has repeatedly plunged our country into deep trouble. South Africa cannot afford a repeat of the load shedding of the country earlier this year, ”says Mazzone.

More borrowing, Eskom secures R1.5 billion loan from French Development Agency, they are so deep in trouble, how on earth will they pay it back?

The utility’s Group Chief Executive, Phakamani Hadebe, said the multi-tranche loan facility will contribute to Eskom’s plans to strengthen and refurbish the transmission infrastructure.

Eskom and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a R1.5 billion (EUR 90 million) loan agreement to support the electricity utility’s investments in extending and strengthening its power transmission grid along the west coast of South Africa.

This loan constitutes the first tranche of a R 6.5 billion (EUR 400 million) multi-tranche loan facility signed between the two institutions in March 2017.

“This first tranche will be dedicated to financing of the Namaqualand Strengthening Phase 2: Juno Gromis Project, which aims to strengthen the power network in the Northern Cape Province, integrate renewable energy sources, and ultimately facilitate cross border transmission,” said the power utility.
