Gordhan mocked by EFF as “dog of the white monopoly”

The ANC’s minister, Pravin Gordhan, has been ridiculed as a “dog of the white monopoly” and now the two EFF members, Malema and Shivambu are in a lawsuit started by the minister.

The two members of the EFF must defend themselves in the Equality Court where they face the onslaught of Gordhan’s legal representatives.

The battle between Gordhan and the EFF leaders followed after Malema supported the minister at a time when the unpopular Jacob Zuma was still on the scene, and the EFF’s slogan “Zuma must fall” was heard in parliament.

With Ramaphosa taking Gordhan back into the cabinet, the EFF leaders’ dissatisfaction was re-displayed when the minister was labeled a dog of the white monopoly, but which now led to a bitter fight in court.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is taking legal action against Springbok rugby player Eben Etzebeth for allegedly using a racial slur.

On Wednesday, the commission said it would approach the Equality Court after receiving a complaint from some residents in Langebaan in the Western Cape.

He’s accused of using a derogatory term allegedly during a row with one of the residents in the area in August.

There was an apparent scuffle between a group, including Etzebeth, and others.

The commission’s Chris Nissen said: “He allegedly used an H-word and that is what is before us at the Human Rights Commission. And that’s why we felt maybe the H-word is like the K-word and because [of that] we decided to take it to the Equality Court.”

Julius Malema’s ‘dead white man’ tweet is hate speech, says SAHRC

Julius Malema’s comments on Twitter will be referred to the equality court and the SAHRC will also investigate the EFF’s ban on media organisations amaBhungane and the Daily Maverick from their events.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Tuesday condemned recent comments attributed to EFF leader Julius Malema — at least at first sight — as amounting to hate speech.

They were referring to a video shared on his Twitter feed in which he paid tribute to the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe.

The tweet, published on September 14 with the words “Rest in power #GUSHUNGO” featured a video with quotes by Mugabe. “The only white man you can trust is a dead white man,” read one of the quotes alongside a picture of Mugabe.

Malema later shared a message, accompanied by the words “Stratcom #GUSHUNGO”, from Twitter, saying it had “investigated the reported content and could not identify any violations of the Twitter Rules”

AfriForum’s Ernst Roets not in contempt of court over apartheid flag tweet – Roets said he was posing an academic question with his tweet

Johannesburg – The Equality Court on Tuesday ruled that AfriForum deputy chief executive Ernst Roets was not in contempt of court when he tweeted an image of the offensive apartheid flag.

Roets posted the image on Twitter soon after the Equality Court, sitting at the South Gauteng High Court, declared that the gratuitous display of the apartheid flag amounts to hate speech.

Judge Phineas Mojapelo said displaying the old flag constituted hate speech and discrimination based on race. He added that the apartheid-era flag be allowed for academic, artistic and journalistic use only if there was a need and permission to do so.

Roets’ offensive post prompted the Nelson Mandela Foundation to file bring an urgent application to the court.

However, Roets dismissed suggestions that he disrespected the judgment. Instead he said the court ruled the flag could be used for artistic, journalistic and academic purposes.

The Black First Land First (BLF) movement claims it has no money to pay legal costs as cases pile up, well, it’s easy, shut your mouth then

The group was in the Equality Court on Tuesday in the matter between itself and a complainant represented by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The Black First Land First (BLF) movement says it has no money for legal representation in its court battles.

The group was in the Equality Court on Tuesday in the matter between itself and a complainant represented by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The complainant has accused the BLF of using hate speech.

The BLF says that groups and people who have taken them to court over various incidents are opportunistic as they know that they cannot afford legal representation.

Deputy president Zanele Lwana explains: “It is a lot of money to pay for legal representation in this country. We already have an overwhelming amount of legal costs from racists, including AfriForum, who want to see our movement destroyed and punished through legal costs.”
