TAU SA is shocked after the announcement that livestock auctions in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North West have been suspended until further notification by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. This announcement follows after the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the Molemole district of Limpopo.

“This is a big blow to the livestock and game farmers in the country, who are already being forced to their knees by the drought,” says Mr. Henk van de Graaf, the regional chairman of TAU SA Norht. “The sale of herds was the only remaining solution for farmers who no longer have food for their animals and now this way of escape is also removed.”

TAU SA realizes that serious action must now be taken to prevent the highly contagious disease but they do not believe that suspending auctions will solve the problem. Commercial livestock farmers are being harmed by narrow-mindedness of poor foot-and-mouth control in the Northern Transvaal

Early in February this year it was announced that foot-and-mouth disease had broken out in the black living area of the Northern Transvaal.

The farm where the first incident was reported is in the Vhembe district and has resulted in South Africa’s export of red meat being hampered.

While the industry is still struggling to recover from the setback, foot-and-mouth disease has broken out again in the Vhembe district, and will mean that farmers will be restrained from selling their market-ready animals.

Farmers have begun to specialize in recent years by marketing animals literally on day and date when the finishing work is completed, and every day that the animals stay longer on the farm is a direct loss that is offset against the profit.

With the intolerance of poor foot-and-mouth control in the Northern Transvaal, it is becoming increasingly urgent that commercial cattle farmers be protected from the annoyance.

KZN meat producers affected by panic over foot-and-mouth disease – Neighbouring countries have banned the import of SA’s red meat until they get proof the outbreak is contained

KwaZulu-Natal meat producers are concerned about the effect of the ban on the export of South African red meat after a strain of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was discovered in Limpopo last week.

SA’s FMD-free status was suspended after the disease was confirmed by the FMD laboratory and the matter was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, eSwatini and Mozambique have announced a complete ban on importing South African meat until they have proof that the disease has been contained.

Sandy le Marque, the CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union (Kwanalu), told Business Day that farmers in the province are deeply affected by the ban and the ensuing panic about the disease. “The impact of a serious disease such as FMD is really serious for agriculture as a whole.
