Police Minister Bheki Cele said, in particular, from his spokesman that he was encouraged by the decrease in murder cases and the increase in arrests made after murders were reported.
The minister referred only to the violence in the Western Cape, and did not mention the rising murder cases in other parts of the country.
The attempt to combat crime and especially murders in the Western Cape under the so-called Operation Lockdown, in which Army soldiers were dragged in because the police were not responsive to their task, was a success for Cele, but the increase in crime in parts of Natal and the Central Transvaal, are not made public.
