Andre de Ruyter started his duties as Chief Executive Officer of Eskom six days earlier by visiting each of the power plants individually to familiarize himself with the circumstances of each of them.
The new Eskom boss has an enormous task upon his hands, with the first task assigned to him, to unbundle Eskom into various entities. This will be executed amid unions that are strongly opposing to the unbundling due to for fear of unemployment.
There is an uncertainty about what his assignment looks like in terms of the recovery process to remove Eskom from the financial foes, but experts say it will require more than one man’s skills to correct the mess that has been made over 25 years.
In recent weeks, Eskom has constantly threatened that load shedding will be implemented if consumers are no longer frugal with power consumption, while Ramaphosa has promised that load shedding will not resume before mid-January.
