The existence of the black trade union Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) is threatened after a multi-million rand scandal is exposed.
The possibility exists now that the union may be forced to deregister due to the alleged poor governance and no corporate governing system has been applied.
The union, which is Saftu’s second-largest affiliate, allegedly fired its secretary, Katishi Masemola, because the officer could be involved in a R19m write-off of an investment with Basebenzi Investment Group.
However, the dismissal was preceded by a fierce internal battle over those who supported him, and the others who demanded his dismissal.
