An elderly businessman Hans van Rooyen (83), from Nigel on the East Rand was killed in his home on Tuesday afternoon.
It is alleged that the crime was committed when van Rooyen, who owns a workshop in the town, went home for lunch around 2 p.m.
According to Martin Harris, Chairman of the neighborhood watch Nigel Community on Patrol, a neighborhood watch member saw suspects in a vehicle in front of van Rooyen’s home at 2.30pm. The neighborhood watchman pursued them, after which the vehicle sped off. The member chased them to Alrapark, a neighborhood just outside Nigel. Harris says the suspects lost control of the vehicle on a turn, where the vehicle rolled and landed on its roof. The occupying suspects ran away.
The neighborhood watch member gave the vehicle registration number to the police, after which it was determined that it belonged to Van Rooyen. One of the neighborhood watch members was sent to Van Rooyen’s residential address, but upon his arrival the
