Intervention must take place at an extremely high level immediately to eradicate the crisis currently prevailing in state hospitals. It was revealed today that there were more than 3,832 deaths in Gauteng hospitals in 2018 due to medical negligence.
Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku provided the figures in response to a written question from Jack Bloom, a DA member of the Gauteng legislature.
So-called serious misfortunes (SAEs) are described as incidents in which unintentional harm is done to a patient because of something done, or not done to a patient, rather than due to a patient’s illness or underlying medical condition.
Most of these incidents – a total of 1,763 – were reported at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. This hospital is the third largest in the world and serves as a referral hospital for patients nationwide. Nearly 150,000 patients are admitted there annually and 500,000 outpatients are treated.
