After more than two years of silence about the possibility of hydraulic fracturing, where high-pressure drilling techniques are used to release natural gas trapped in shale rock in the Karoo, the possibility of the unacceptable practice has risen again.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the ANC still has its sights set on the practice of robbing the Karoo of its underground water sources with the extraction of shale gas.
The ANC’s Mantashe also said shale gas would soon be mined in the Karoo.
Strong action by experts has led the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal during July this year to cut off any possibility of hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo.
