SANDF splashes R20.5m on luxury German cars, but says funding shortfall is impacting on maintaining military base in Centurion

While the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) was unable to maintain the Thaba Tshwane military base in Centurion due to “predominantly a lack of funds”, it has managed to find the cash to spend R20.5m on “luxury vehicles”, valued at over R600 000 each, for senior management in the previous two financial years.
This is according to Parliamentary replies by Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who responded to questions from FF Plus leader Pieter Groenewald and DA MP Cilliers Brink.
Groenewald asked how many luxury vehicles exceeding R600 000 were purchased by the SANDF for senior management in the 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 financial years.
“No luxury vehicles exceeding R600 000 were purchased by the SA National Defence Force in the 2014/15 to 2016/17 financial years. Twenty luxury vehicles were procured in the 2017/18 financial year, and two vehicles were procured in the 2018/19 financial year,” Mapisa-Nq

Flooding in Centurion is causing havoc

Continuous rains in the Central Transvaal are disrupting traffic but in Centurion buildings, roads and low water bridges became dangerous.
Large areas are flooded, and many vehicles are being swept away by the floodwater, but to date it is unknown whether any people died in the floodwater.
In some places, more than 280 mm of rain has been measured for the past week, and meteorologists predict even more rain for Tuesday.
Chaos has arisen on roads and some streets, and load shedding has also caused long queues of vehicles to stand by robots that do not work.
Meanwhile, Die Vryburger learned that parts of the Northern Cape that had not been raining for four years now are “past the stage where drought relief will help”, one of the farmers said.

Higher education minister Blade Nzimande says he will not allow a proposed Afrikaans college to operate if it contravenes the bill of rights by excluding certain groups based on race or culture.
Nzimande was speaking in Durban on Monday regarding the construction of an Afrikaans-based occupational training college, Sol-Tech, in Centurion, Pretoria.
Construction has already begun on the college, which is being spearheaded by trade union Solidarity.
Nzimande said the constitution is clear in that there is nothing wrong with private companies or entities establishing higher education institutions – but should any institution go against the bill of rights, he would not sign off on it.
“As you might be aware, there are media reports that Solidarity aims to build a R300m private Afrikaans university in Centurion. As a department, we have not received any application for any such institution,” he said.
