South Africa is two days into 2020 and the first school burns. The Tokelo High School in the Vaal Triangle lost four classrooms due to arson. Panyaza Lesufi, the MEC of Education in Gauteng, is disappointed with the R4 million damage done.
It was soon established that arsonists are responsible for the damage, but the motive is unknown.
It is the umpteenth school where blacks learners receive that were partially or totally destroyed by arsonists. Damage to school buildings over the past decade amounts to millions of Rand.
Observers are asking why only black schools are being burned, as it creates the impression that they want to be educated in traditionally white schools.
