Orania is no stranger to controversy. However, the “whites-only” Afrikaaner town in the Northern Cape found itself in the headlines for a non-racial matter last week. A student-teacher – who grew-up in the isolated settlement – has been accused of raping a minor while attending Volkskool Orania.
The case has rocked locals and outsiders alike, with Orania priding itself on an allegedly “crime-free” reputation. Representatives of the SAPS’s Child Protection Unit turned up at the school to investigate a case of child molestation against the educator-in-training last month.
The area receives assistance from Hopetown SAPS. The location is a 30-minute drive from Orania, and it is at their local magistrates where the alleged rapist will face the music. Orania is still subject to the South African Constitution, so traditional law remains. They are also assisted by authorities in the Pixley ka Seme district.
