Death bells are ringing for SAA due to impending strike

The impending strike at SAA by the SA Cabin Staff Association and Numsa could mean the end of the airline. In the meantime, the Pilot Association announced that they supported the idea and that the state entity’s overall top management should be replaced. Furthermore, they threatened to act if a Chief Executive with no experience aviation experience and knowledge are appointed.

The imminent strike comes after SAA announced that a restructuring will take place to make the entity more cost effective. The SAA’s enormous debt burden means that it has no choice but to lay off about 1,000 staff members, but the unions threaten to call a large-scale strike if retrenchments continue.

Persons who will use SAA’s services on Friday 15 November 2019 were advised to make alternative arrangements as all flights for Friday and Saturday were canceled considering the impending strike.

The SAA is technically bankrupt, and if a strike is now called, it will ring the death bells.

Trade unions demands play a major role in extremely poor financial condition of the country

The union, National Union of Metal Workers of SA (Numsa), rejected the latest wage offer negotiated for its workers in the Motor Industry Bargaining Council.

Numsa confirmed over the weekend that the offer was not accepted and reiterated that it will not accept compromises for its more than 300,000 workers in the industry.

The union spokesman says a new agreement is being negotiated after the previous agreement’s term expires in August this year, and negotiations have been in progress since July, but to date no acceptable proposal has been offered.

Night shift allowances for petrol attendants, higher wages, are claimed, and the offer of a 6% increase is rejected altogether.

The demands of trade unions have skyrocketed in the broad labor market and played a major role in the extremely poor financial condition of the country.

Air travellers in SA – Bring your own food, union says, as strike threatens airport catering services

Air travellers in South Africa have been warned to pack lunch boxes as there will be no food or catering services on several airlines as workers are expected to embark on a strike on Monday.

This as the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) warned on Sunday that there would be no food or catering services on several airlines and in airport lounges due to threatened strike action.

“The strike will affect OR Tambo airport, Cape Town international and King Shaka in Durban. We advise that if you intend to fly on certain airlines tomorrow [Monday] please pack a ‘skhaftin’ [lunch box] because there will no food or catering on the flight,” said Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola.

Air Chefs is a subsidiary of SAA.

Airline spokesman Tlali Tlali confirmed a notice to strike had been received, but said contingency plans were in place to ensure there was “minimal to no impact” on operations.

Numsa gets salary agreement – more pay and perks but no productivity or fewer strikes

The National Union for Metal Workers (Numsa), has negotiated less than 50% of its salary after months of talks to negotiate a 20% salary increase for its members.

The union, which is the largest in South Africa, and which does little more for its members than negotiate new salaries on a regular basis, failed miserably in last month’s negotiations, but nevertheless received far more than what experts described as fair .

With the first year, members will receive a 9% increase, and a 7% for the next two years, which is significantly less than the 20% suggested to members.

However, financial experts point out that the unions can all be shaved under the same comb and can be seen as institutions that promote the economic decline in the country.

The unions provide unreasonable salary increases, greater fringe benefits, but do nothing to promote better productivity and fewer strikes.

Strikes could soon paralyze car manufacturers in South Africa if an agreement is not reached with the trade union Numsa soon.

The first round of talks failed, and a second attempt was envisaged, but the demands made by the union left a red light for the future of the industry.

The first round of talks in Port Elisabeth ended in stalemate after the Numsa negotiators demanded a 20% increase.

A next round of negotiations will be held in Pretoria, and the warning has already been heard that another failed round of negotiations will mean a strike that will affect all manufacturers.

Numsa wants Gordhan’s head over extraordinarily high escalation costs at new failed power stations – according to Gordhan, power stations are “poorly designed and poorly erected”

Trade union Numsa demanded that the Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, be dismissed for the extraordinarily high escalation costs at the Medupi and Kusile power stations.

The construction cost has doubled to almost R292 billion and both power stations are described as “poorly designed and poorly constructed” by Gordhan.

Earlier, it was confirmed that the two power stations did not meet the requirements, and billions of rand would have to be used to rectify the errors.

Numsa members are threatening with a major strike at Kulula airways right before Christmas demanding a salary increase as well as a 13th check

British Airways and Comair met on Thursday with the Commission of Arbitration to prevent a possible strike by Numsa members.

Members of Numsa demands a 13th check, travel allowance and a 12% salary increase. Comair ensures that in the event of a strike, interruptions will be minimized.

Meanwhile, Comair denied accusations of racism by Numsa, which indicates that the trade union’s actions could be another company.

At present, SAL is in the mood that he had to enter into agreements with a foreign airways company because his finances do not allow him to do anything himself.
