Sex education taken to far in SA – 120 000 teenage pregnancies recorded in 2019 – Comprehensive sexuality education not been successful in ensuring a decrease in pregnancies

The DA has said the more than 120 000 teenage pregnancies between age 10 and 19 as at June 2019 should raise alarm bells in the country.

“Sexuality education in schools should focus on pregnancy prevention in schools but also awareness needs to be raised in communities,” DA MP Chantel King said.

King made the statement following a report in Independent Media on Friday which showed that the number of teenage pregnancies has increased in the 2018-19 financial year to 124 628 births, including those school-going children still at primary school level.

KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Gauteng are leading the pack with the high number of teenage pregnancies.

This was revealed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga in a written response to a parliamentary question from King.

King had asked Motshekga the number of pupils who fell pregnant between June 2018 and June 2019 and their age groups.

Sex education taken too far? Randfontein High School has 34 black pupils who are pregnant – No doubt they will soon be standing in the queue for Child Grant as well

A High School in Randfontein has more or less 34 pregnant pupils at school right now at this moment who is still sitting at their school desk, trying to pass their grade this year.

According to informed sources, one in 18 female pupils in the school is pregnant, and all possible measures taken, are useless.

The school has its own clinic, a sex education section, and a “sympathetic” team of teachers, but it apparently did not contribute to changing the scandalous condition.

The principal has admitted that they tried everything in their power to stop this epidemic, but however the school hasn’t yet managed to reduce the pregnancies.

Then again, educators believe that the provision of facilities by certain cultural groups is seen as a method of encouraging pregnancies.

Sex education taken too far in SA? Stats SA reports that well over a thousand girls under 14 years old gave birth last year!

Well over a thousand pre-teen and early-teen girls gave birth in South Africa last year, Statistics South Africa reported on Thursday.

In the 14 months between January 2018 and February 2019, the agency said, 1,287 births were recorded to mothers between the ages of 10 and 14, based on data drawn from the department of home affairs’ National Population Register (NPR).

That does not include unregistered births, nor those that have not been properly recorded. A further 4,872 births were to mothers either younger than 10 or older than 54 – or where the mother’s age had not been recorded and might have been between 10 and 14.
The 2018 recorded births for these very young mothers was down slightly, by 1.2%, compared to the previous year.

But the large number of young mothers did not stop the trend of an increase in the average age of mothers in South Africa.
