Leoné Lauren (Lauren Copley) met Sien jou môre

Lauren Copley is ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar wat ‘n florerende loopbaan as ‘n tiener in die 1970s gehad het. Sy het reeds op die ouderdom van 11 haar eerste album vrygestel, as Leoné Lauren, en het daarna verskeie treffers gehad met haar vrystellings op solus sewe. Hiervoor het sy twee Goue Plaat-toekennings ontvang, en het ook in 1973 Suid-Afrika by die Tokio Musiekfees in Japan verteenwoordig toe sy slegs 15 jaar oud was.

Lauren het drie Suid-Afrikaanse Top 20 treffers gehad:
1. Flower of life – 1971, #11, 12 weke
2. It’s too late now – 1972, #2, 23 weke
3. Kentucky blues – 1973, #1, 19 weke

Orania student-teacher accused of raping a minor while attending Volkskool Orania: Accused born and raised in Orania

Orania is no stranger to controversy. However, the “whites-only” Afrikaaner town in the Northern Cape found itself in the headlines for a non-racial matter last week. A student-teacher – who grew-up in the isolated settlement – has been accused of raping a minor while attending Volkskool Orania.

The case has rocked locals and outsiders alike, with Orania priding itself on an allegedly “crime-free” reputation. Representatives of the SAPS’s Child Protection Unit turned up at the school to investigate a case of child molestation against the educator-in-training last month.

The area receives assistance from Hopetown SAPS. The location is a 30-minute drive from Orania, and it is at their local magistrates where the alleged rapist will face the music. Orania is still subject to the South African Constitution, so traditional law remains. They are also assisted by authorities in the Pixley ka Seme district.

Shortage in Afrikaans markers raises concerns for matric readiness in some provinces

Umalusi — the quality assurance in education and training body — has raised concerns that some provinces have a shortage of Afrikaans markers.

This was revealed by Mafu Rakometsi, Umalusi’s chief executive, on Thursday at a press briefing in Milpark, Johannesburg where the body announced that it had approved the writing of the 2019 matric examinations.

Rakometsi said the shortage of markers related to subjects such as maths, geography, history and business studies, which some learners write in Afrikaans.
He added that the problem is not with the markers that have to mark Afrikaans language.

“The heads of departments have been alerted and they have been told about the problems in their provinces, and it is for them to see how they sort it out. And we will be monitoring how they have sorted the problem out,” he said.

Afrikaans as a language of instruction at Stellenbosch University will have to take a subordinate place – English will be the medium of instruction

In June 2016, Stellenbosch University decided that English would be the language of instruction and that Afrikaans should take a subordinate place.

The vote cast by 113 against 10 votes in favor of the resolution is a clear indication that Afrikaans is being rejected by the government and certain opposition parties.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the university’s decision to make English the main language, with Afrikaans in addition, is a “reasonable” decision that should remain so.

Language policy judgement explained
Judge Johan Froneman confirmed the bench’s unanimous decision on Thursday. He explained his reasons for upholding the contentious language policy at Stellenbosch University, reasoning that too many students on campus are unable to learn subject matter when taught in Afrikaans:

No wonder Lesufi wants to place pupils in Afrikaans schools – Gauteng Education accused of failing pupils by allowing ‘shocking’ school conditions

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday said the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) was failing pupils by allowing poor conditions to persist in schools.

The DA’s shadow MEC for infrastructure development and property management in the province, Alan Fuchs, made the statement following an oversight visit to the Apex Primary School in Lenasia. Fuchs visited the school with councillor Dave Dewes.

“This is not the first complaint about this particular school or the first site visit. In January of this year, the DA’s shadow MEC for education in Gauteng, Khume Ramulifho MPL, together with the former constituency head, and councillors, visited the school but were denied entry,” said Fuchs.

“This obstructive attitude by the school management and the poor state of the school was reported to the GDE, which responded by undertaking to deal with the concerns raised.”

Fuchs said the most recent visit showed conclusively that the department of education had reneged

Video: Double Amputee Discharged From State Hospital with Mortal Infection, Left to Die Without even Morphine. Needs help!

Home invasion victim Braam Blignault lost both his legs from wounds suffered during a home invasion and is waiting to die after contracting an infection and does not even have money for morphine to dull the pain. Young South African Braam Blignault lost both his legs since making this (english-language) video below.

He is now at home waiting to die, the state hospital has said they can do no more for him.

This family cannot afford health insurance and therefore they cannot afford the morphine he needs to stay comfortable and at least make the most of the time he has left with his wife and kids. He has an infection in his pelvis and a septic wound where the skin is too weak to be stitched together.

Panyaza Lesufi slams new Afrikaans university funded by Solidarity: ‘Don’t remind us of apartheid’ – Jealousy makes you nasty!

The campus is part of the union’s education and employment projects worth R4,5 billion over the next five years. The project is set to cost about R300 million funded through donations from the community, the union said.

The university will be home to Solidarity’s accredited, Afrikaans private vocational training college founded on Christian values.

The campus is the first of the major projects the union would embark on over the next five years to boost education and employment to the tune of R4,5 billion.

The next project would be the construction of the Akademia campus where “world-class education will be offered through Afrikaans as the medium of instruction”.

“The strength of Sol-Tech and of this campus lies in the fact that it is being built by the community,” said Solidarity COO Dr Dirk Hermann.

“Every Solidarity member donates R10 to a building fund each month.
