Double standards!SA justice system corrupt – #FeesMustFall activist Kanya Cekeshe eligible for immediate parole but parole for Boeremag prisoners denied

Kanya Cekeshe, the only #FeesMustFall activist behind bars, for his role in the 2016 student protests, is now eligible for early parole after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a Reconciliation Day special remission of sentences for certain categories of offenders.

In detailing who would be eligible for a remission of sentence, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola was clear that certain categories would not be considered — including those convicted of sexual offences, domestic violence and child abuse.

However, he said that Cekeshe — who was to become eligible for parole in February in any event – was from Monday immediately eligible. Cekeshe has been in Leeuwkop prison since December 2017, after he was sentenced to five years behind bars for public violence and malicious damage to property. He pleaded guilty to setting a police vehicle alight during a #FeesMustFall protest in 2016.

Cekeshe is one of about 9% of prison inmates who fall under the special dispens

Tired of being ‘coloured’ – Coloured activist is now dragging government to court to remove the separate classification of coloured and Indian

An activist who is tired of being classified as a coloured South African is now dragging the government to scrap the separate classifications of coloured and Indian and rather to regard them as black South Africans.

Glen Snyman, a teacher from Oudtshoorn and founder of People Against Race Classification (Parc), has started a lawsuit against the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the National Department of Basic Education in the Cape Labour Court.

He claims, among other things, that:

* Brown and Indian people’s race classification should carry the same weight as when considering black candidates for positions or promotion;

* Blocks on application forms in which someone has to classify themselves as brown or Indian must be removed from all WCED forms.

* Someone can identify himself as “other” in the person’s racial classification, instead of coloured or Indian, on the WCED recruitment website;

* The WCED immediately stops using the word and id

A day of activism at Clifton Beach descended into acrimony after a group of protesters marked the occasion by slaughtering a sheep at the Cape Town tourist hot-spot.

Demonstrators had gathered in their hundreds during Friday, to take action against the alleged racist employment of a private security company on one of Clifton’s secluded beaches.

Those affected were mainly people of colour, and even included local ANC figure Faiez Jacobs. They were shifted on by the PPA firm earlier this week, in what has been described as an “affront” to citizens’ rights.

Activists say the offering was a way to call on their ancestors to respond to the trauma.

Local media reported that the meat from the animal would be braaied after the ritual was complete.
