R7 million school in Eastern Cape build in a area obviously not suitable for any construction, now in ruins – this is just one more example of the incompetence of the ANC educational department

It is 11am on a cold Friday at Mcheni Primary School and there is not a single pupil or teacher at school. The dilapidated mud school on the outskirts of the small town of Tsolo in Tyweka village, KuJence (can’t find on map), becomes a ghost when the weather is bad, like this particular Friday.

When it is rainy, windy or cold, pupils are sent home early or told to not attend school at all.

Last Friday morning, while many learners around the country were busy with their studies to attain a level of education which will allow them to acquire crucial skills for their future, Mcheni Primary School pupils were sitting at home.

The Eastern Cape department of education confirmed that it was aware of the situation at the school.

More than 250 pupils use mud structures as their classrooms, which were built by the community in the early 1990s.

China invests millions in SA – South Africa is not for sale. This country cannot be sold out to anyone!

China is making big investments in South Africa, and the latest investment in the Eastern Cape is a concern for some.

A Chinese delegation of business people from the Zhejiang region of the country has just completed their finishing work in the Eastern Cape to sign a deal for a huge port development project.

The Port of Port St. Johns was visited by the Chinese province’s governor, Yuan Jiajun as well as visits to East London and Coega area near Port Elizabeth.

The visit, which was initially aimed at improving trade relations, apparently gave rise to possible new developments that will take place in the area.

Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has warned the Chinese that if they want to do business in the Eastern Cape they will have to accept the province is not for sale.

His strong words come in the wake of mounting fears among the public that the Chinese are seeking to take advantage of the country’s resources as a further extension of their busines

The African Way, always space for one more even if it involves sheep! Police recovered 30 stolen sheep in taxi in Eastern Cape – 5 suspects arrested

Five people have been arrested for allegedly stealing 30 sheep, which they loaded into a taxi in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape.

Police spokesperson Capt Ursula Roelofse said police followed up on information that the sheep were being transported in the taxi early on Friday morning.

The vehicle was stopped and the suspects arrested. Police recovered 30 sheep.

Roelofse said the suspects were allegedly part of a syndicate operating in the Eastern Cape and Free State.

The men, aged between 22 and 39, are expected to appear in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

ANC-government wants to close down about 3,000 schools’ doors due to a reduction learner numbers

The Department of Basic Education is aiming to close a few thousand schools due to the reduction in student numbers.

The schools that are affected the most in the country have apparently received notice that a certain number of pupils are required to keep a school’s doors open.

The majority of schools are located in rural areas, and the Eastern Cape is most affected by the arrangement.

According to a spokesperson for the Department, a primary school should have no less than 135 pupils, and secondary schools should have more than 225 pupils.

Investigations show that about 3,000 schools are likely to be affected, meaning pupils should be enrolled elsewhere.

512 kg of marijuana with a street value of R12m openly transported on trailer

Eastern Cape police stopped a minibus taxi  Sunday evening on the R56 between Molteno and Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape, carrying 57 large bags of marijuana on an open trailer. The 32-year-old driver was arrested.

It is believed that the marijuana was collected in Lusikisiki and destined for the Western Cape.

According to Capt. Police spokeswoman Ursula Roelofse identified the marijuana as “skunk”, a type of marijuana that is apparently very valuable, the 512kg of marijuana seized has a street value of about R12.8m. Roelofse says the breakthrough will ” send a clear message that local authorities will not allow small towns to be used as transport routes by drug smugglers.

The raid was carried out in conjunction with Aliwal North and Queenstown Police’s crime intelligence unit, as well as the police K9 unit.

SA characterised by chaos and violence – Angry protesters barricaded roads with burning tires and set bus alight in Eastern-Cape

Protestors in the Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp area barricaded the main roads with burning tyres and stones on Stanford Road, Gail Road and other roads in the Helensvale area and in Bethelsdorp, since 06:00 on 19 February 2019.

Public Order Police have been deployed in the areas of Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale and 5 protesters were arrested. The protestors (two men and three females) aged between 28 and 35 are arrested and detained under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, Gatherings Act and the National Road Traffic Act.

A bus was also set alight. POPS will remain in the area to monitor the situation. At this stage the reason for the protest is unclear. Police are warning the community that although they have the right to protest, they should do so within the ambit of the law and not cause damages to infrastructure and blocking the roads.

South Africa needs stronger leadership and increased budgets in mental healthcare

The psychiatric profession should play a greater role in advocating for patients’ rights and improving management of mental health in the public sector after a series of recent tragedies that highlighted the neglect of mental healthcare in South Africa.

Professor Bonga Chiliza, incoming South African Society of Psychiatrists (Sasop) president, says the deaths of 144 patients in the now-notorious Life Esidimeni tragedy; allegations of abuse and human rights violations at the Tower Psychiatric Hospital in the Eastern Cape; and the suicide of UCT Health Sciences Dean Prof Bongani Mayosi following his battle with depression all point to need for better management of public sector psychiatry

More borrowing, Eskom secures R1.5 billion loan from French Development Agency, they are so deep in trouble, how on earth will they pay it back?

The utility’s Group Chief Executive, Phakamani Hadebe, said the multi-tranche loan facility will contribute to Eskom’s plans to strengthen and refurbish the transmission infrastructure.

Eskom and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a R1.5 billion (EUR 90 million) loan agreement to support the electricity utility’s investments in extending and strengthening its power transmission grid along the west coast of South Africa.

This loan constitutes the first tranche of a R 6.5 billion (EUR 400 million) multi-tranche loan facility signed between the two institutions in March 2017.

“This first tranche will be dedicated to financing of the Namaqualand Strengthening Phase 2: Juno Gromis Project, which aims to strengthen the power network in the Northern Cape Province, integrate renewable energy sources, and ultimately facilitate cross border transmission,” said the power utility.
