Compared to our motherlands in Europe, South Africa is a young country and the history of our own nation began only in the year 1652, with a prehistory of the Portuguese period from the 1400’s. But, despite our short history, it was a period full of sensational events, all of which cannot be described in detail here. The fact that blacks and whites are “baring their teeth” at each other in the year 2020, is not due to an event that happened unexpectedly recently. This is a problem that has been dormant for centuries.

Different communities, and different individuals have experienced or interpreted the incompatibility problem in different ways. For some it was a serious problem and for others it was “surmountable problems”. 13.8 million people in SA, are living on less than R19 a day, according to the 2019 Household Affordability Index

According to the latest Household Affordability Index compiled by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD), more than half of SA’s population live on less than R41 a day.

The September 2019 Household Affordability Index shows that more than half of the population are living on less than R1 230 a month. The Index also shows that a quarter of the population, approximately 13.8 million people, are living on less than R19 a day.

A total of 56% of South Africans (30.4 million people) are living on less than R41 a day.

The group said: “Affordability, in its simplest form, is relative to income levels and the cost of goods and services (expenses). Workers work to support their families. Workers, reasonably expect to cover the costs of goods and services needed for dignity and household functionality off their wages. In most  South African households, only one family member works. Black African population is in the majority and constitutes approximately 81% of the total SA population -Population increases by 900 000 from 2018 and has risen to 58.8 million

The South African population has risen to 58.8 million from 2018’s 57. 9 million, figures released by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) Statistician General Risenga Maluleke have revealed.

The statistics are contained in the 2019 mid-year population estimates report released on Monday.

Of the 58.8 million, 51% are female while 49% are male.

Maluleke said births remained the main driver of population growth in South Africa. Population figures were also impacted by deaths and immigration.

The report reveals that by mid-2019, the country had recorded 1.2 million births, 200 000 net migration, while 500 000 deaths were recorded.

More than half the population, the report reveals, lives in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

About 15 million (25.8%) South Africans live in Gauteng. Just over 11 million (19.2%) people reside in KwaZulu-Natal while 6.8 million South Africans (11.6%) stay in the Western Cape.
