Following a court ruling handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal in SA, the owners of firearms, whose licenses have expired, can now apply for new licenses.
According to this ruling, there is no need to wait until the next amnesty period. Firearm owners whose licenses have expired must now be allowed to apply for these firearm licenses from scratch.
The South African Police Service initially refused to consider new applications from members of the public whom did not apply on time.
The refusal followed a letter from the Commissioner of Police issued on 3 February 2016. The letter indicated that such applications should not be accepted by the SAPS, and these members of the public should be instructed to hand in their firearms at the nearest police station.
