Face of new DA leadership set to be all white with Steenhuisen taking position of Parliamentary leader

The Sunday Times is reporting that the Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to have a new all white leadership following several resignations including those of two prominent black members.

The publication said supporters of new federal chair Helen Zille are planning a clean sweep as it grapples with a leaderless organisation.

Last week was grim for the official opposition when it’s now ex leader Mmusi Maimane, former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip, chief executive officer (CEO) Paul Boughey and Herman Mashaba resigned from the party.

This came days after Zille’s come back to the party’s powerful position of federal council chair.

The paper is reporting that insiders in the DA said the vacant positions look set to be filled members who are close to the new federal council chair.

Zille denies that she is the cause of black exodus from DA

With the election of Helen Zille as the DA’s Federal Chairman and the resignation of Herman Mashaba as mayor of Johannesburg, Zille denied allegations during a radio interview that she was the common denominator causing many black members to leave the party.

Accusations that a right-wing hijacking of the DA has taken place have been posted on social media. That the party is now suddenly returning to a so-called “white” control does not go down well with the voters on the street.

Political analysts reckon that the reaction of black members and supporters could lead to the total collapse of the left-wing party that has managed to present an image of non-racism.

Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba announced his resignation from the DA and his job as mayor

The expected resignation comes after former DA leader Helen Zille on Sunday won the vote for the powerful federal council chairperson position.

It is to our understands that Mashaba told a number of Gauteng leaders on Saturday night that he would quit his job should Zille win the hotly contested battle, which is second to the party leader position.

Zille was up against Athol Trollip, Mike Waters and Thomas Walters for the job.

It is understood that some DA leaders were trying to convince Mashaba to reconsider his position.

However, about two hours after the announcement of Zille’s victory, the City of Johannesburg issued a statement stating that Mashaba would be hosting a press conference on Monday morning. Further details were not provided.

A party insider confirmed that he had informed a group of the party’s Gauteng leaders, of his decision.

Policy fellow for the Institute for Race Relations Helen Zille has extended an invite for tea to EFF leader Julius Malema. She has proposed an intensive discussion with the EFF leader on the topic of South Africa’s future.

Zille, who has ventured into the world of podcasts with a show called Tea with Helen, has publically extended an invite to the EFF leader, which is seemingly supported by social media users.

In a poll conducted on Monday, Zille questioned who she should interview next on her show between Thabo Mbeki and Malema.

Malema seems to be the crowd favourite as Zille extended an invite to him on Tuesday.

Previously interviewing the likes of Wits Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib to Ferial Haffajee, Zille has said the live debate would provide a platform for a no-holds-barred discussion on the country’s future.
