Eskom – in return for R59bn bailout from National Treasury, Eskom must recover Soweto, municipal debt

National Treasury is set to impose 28 conditions on Eskom in return for a R59bn lifeline to keep the cash-strapped power utility afloat and enable it to pay interest on its mounting debt burden.

Treasury updated Parliament’s appropriations oversight committee on the conditions attached to an appropriations bill on Wednesday. The bill, which has not yet been passed by Parliament, grants R59bn to Eskom over two years. This is in addition to R69bn over three years announced by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni in his maiden February budget.

In addition to regular and detailed reports of all its finances, Treasury has stipulated the utility needs to recover all debt owed to it by errant municipalities, national department and corporations, including Soweto.

Jacob Zuma back in Supreme Court – conviction could lead to a long time behind bars for the former ANC leader

The chief justice’s office confirmed that former ANC president Jacob Zuma will appear in Pietermaritzburg in court.

Zuma is expected to appear in a court case on Friday, which will now be four days sooner than initially scheduled.

The case, which would initially begin on October 15, was premature amid his initial request that the case be wholly removed from the role of the arms deal he allegedly was involved in.

The lawsuit will only take place after Zuma has managed to evade the courtroom for several years, but after 14 years the moment of truth has come to him about the alleged corruption involving a R38 billion transaction.

These are some of the knife’s serious court cases that have been held lately, and suspicions exist that conviction could lead to a long time behind bars for the former ANC leader.

Agrizzi, who testified about State Capture and allegations of corruption, bribery and tender fraud, still has the ax above his head and will be subject to cross-examination

Former Bosasa executive Angelo Agrizzi is back in front of the Zondo Commission after spelling out numerous people’s offenses during his testimony.

The Zondo Commission, which costs the country millions of rand from the state treasury, has been running for months longer than initially approved, and will, according to informed sources, continue its investigation for a long time.

Angelo Agrizzi, who initially testified about State hijacking and allegations of corruption, bribery and tender fraud, still has the fall ax above his head and will be subject to cross-examination.

Legal representatives from various people and institutions are likely to take part in the process of pushing the former chief with cross-examination into a corner.

Kevin Wakefield is the first person to face the accusation of receiving bribes of R100,000 a month.

Pravin Gordhan is accused of restricting the media’s right to freedom of speech

ANC government minister Pravin Gordhan is accused by South African businessman Iqbal Survé of wanting to restrict the media’s right to freedom of speech.

The Independent Media Group claims that the ANC government’s ministers are making efforts to mouth the group’s publications because there is too much evidence against Pravin Gordhan.

On Wednesday, the media group’s offices were searched by police in a so-called “raid”, and members of the group say the investigation was focused on the Cape Town offices, but investigators say they searched the offices for alleged illegal stock trading.

The investigators appear to have made an intimidating attempt to protect the minister in the hope that something illegal would be found.

Afrikaans as a language of instruction at Stellenbosch University will have to take a subordinate place – English will be the medium of instruction

In June 2016, Stellenbosch University decided that English would be the language of instruction and that Afrikaans should take a subordinate place.

The vote cast by 113 against 10 votes in favor of the resolution is a clear indication that Afrikaans is being rejected by the government and certain opposition parties.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the university’s decision to make English the main language, with Afrikaans in addition, is a “reasonable” decision that should remain so.

Language policy judgement explained
Judge Johan Froneman confirmed the bench’s unanimous decision on Thursday. He explained his reasons for upholding the contentious language policy at Stellenbosch University, reasoning that too many students on campus are unable to learn subject matter when taught in Afrikaans:

Eskom drowning in debt, will need R69 billion to service its overflowing liabilities

Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza during the power utility’s annual financial results presentation on November 28, 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa. During the presentation, it was revealed that Eskom’s debt service costs have doubled in a one year to R45bn.

Jabu Mabuza addressed the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises on Wednesday and announced Eskom is owed R20 billion by municipalities.

The chief executive officer announced that the power utility is in a critical condition as government’s financial support only addresses short-term liquidity, and Mabuza revealed that these issues will be detailed in the progress report, National Treasury and the Minister of Finance are currently working on.

Corrupt NSFAS officials steal students’ money and rob young South Africans of their opportunities for a better life

Three workers employed at the National Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS) were arrested on Wednesday on fraud charges. According to dr. Randall Carolissen, NSFAS’s executive administrator, they are all situated the Wynberg office in Cape Town and allegedly paid student allowances into their own bank accounts. Carolissen said the three allegedly requested payment from applicants so that their applications could be processed, or even accessed application forms. NSFAS’s application process is free.

The scheme was placed under administration in 2018. Since then, a number of forensic investigations have been conducted, including the general payment of money, student grants and the leakage of sensitive and confidential information.

Police woman rents out her service pistol to criminals for R30 000 to rob her units office

A 34-year-old female constable from Bloemfontein was arrested on Tuesday night after renting out her service pistol to criminals to rob her unit’s office in for alleged firearms, including assault rifles to be used in other crimes.

According to the Hawks national spokesman, Brig. Hangwani Mulaudzi the police’s intelligence unit in Bloemfontein and officers from the Hawks’ serious crime investigation unit have set a trap for the officer. Police used undercover cops that they posed as criminals. The constable was captured after allegedly “borrowing her weapon for the criminals” to carry out the robbery. Mulaudzi says she apparently told the the undercover cops which firearms are in the safe at her office. They met the officer at about 22:00 at a gas station in King Edward Road in Willows, Bloemfontein, showed her the “stolen firearms” and paid her R30 000 for the use of her service pistol.

Black lawyer from Cape Town says ‘rape elderly white woman and kill her afterwards’ on FB profile

Cape Town non-practicing lawyer Maluleka Nkopo faces charges of racism and hate speech after he whipped up a storm on social media on Wednesday with his facebook entry that a white woman should be raped in front of her husband and killed afterwards.

This was after Nkopo wrote on Facebook earlier in the day: “How do you kiss a white ass? If you rape an elderly white woman in front of her husband and then kill them both. ”

DA councilor of the Mangaung Metro in Bloemfontein, Zaandré Campher laid charges of racism and hate speech against Nkopo at the Human Rights Commision. Campher says he believes such statements stir up hatred. People seem to think they can say anything on Facebook. Nkopo WHO describes himself as a non-practicing lawyer in Cape Town, wrote back by saying he “regretted” that his “sarcasm was misunderstood” and that it was giving the wrong impression.

Brutal farm murders and attacks in SA – Israeli team arrives in South Africa to interview farmers and evaluate situation

On 25 September 2019, a team of from Israel comprising of associates from the security, industry, media and farming sectors in Israel and a member of “Break The Silence About South Africa” arrived in South Africa on a fact finding mission and are settling in to their temporary base camp on a farm in Limpopo.

They will visit farmers in the area and interview them about many elements affecting their lives including, but not limited to, safety and security, land expropriation without compensation, land for mining, food security, kibbutz farming, farm Attacks and farm Murders.

The team will visit all of the 9 Provinces in South Africa with the duration of this visit expected to last at least six weeks. The emphasis is about spending time with farmers and evaluating each situation, assisting with and providing expert solutions. This is not a film production project however this is something that can be arranged for later date.
